In 1929, with a population of 1,559, the community of Sloatsburg voted overwhelmingly (10 to 1) to form a Village. At that time, Sloatsburg’s major industry was a fabric printing mill but there were several smaller businesses also serving the area. “These included a blacksmith shop, an ice cream and confectionery store, a laundry, a shoemaker, meat market, department store, restaurants, hotels and gas stations,” according to the Sloatsburg Diamond Jubilee journal.
Much has changed since then, but the small town feel and welcoming residents have held strong. Over recent years, with the revitalization of the Village, more and more tourists can be seen hiking into Harriman and frequenting our businesses. In September, 2018, Sloatsburg was identified as one of four "up and coming" communities in Rockland County (LoHud article: Rockland vs. Bergen: What towns are up and coming?).
As we approach Sloatsburg’s 90th anniversary in October, 2019, the Village has decided to celebrate with a series of events throughout the year. This website was created to provide residents with: - information about the events - opportunities to contribute to the Keepsake Journal - sponsorship options for individuals and businesses
